A 60-year-old man, Joseph Omotemi, was tragically killed by a hit-and-run driver along the Kara section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
PUNCH Metro reports that Sunday night’s fatal accident marked the third hit-and-run incident resulting in death within Lagos and Ogun states in just five days.
According to reports by the Ogun State Police Command, the sexagenarian was attempting to cross to the other side of the expressway when an unidentified driver struck him, killing him instantly.
Addressing the incident, the command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, citing reports from eyewitnesses and police officers at the scene, criticised the deceased for failing to properly assess the road before attempting to cross.
She said, “The accident happened when the pedestrian attempted to cross the expressway without properly checking for oncoming vehicles, resulting in a high-speed car striking and killing him on the spot.
“The deceased’s body has been taken to Real Divine Touch Hospital in Ibafo.”
Odutola stated that police officers, led by the Divisional Police Officer, had launched a manhunt to apprehend the fleeing driver and ensure justice was served.
A report by PUNCH Metro on Monday detailed a similar tragedy that occurred when an unidentified female pedestrian was killed by a driver on the Ijebu-Ijesha Road in Ogun State.
The woman was killed instantly in the incident on November 21, 2024.
Another female passenger lost her life in similar circumstances, while the other passengers narrowly survived.
The accident, which occurred at 6:17 p.m. on Wednesday, involved a fully loaded Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BOJ716XF and an unidentified truck.
The passenger bus from Lagos State to Ibadan reportedly collided with the unidentified truck, which had entered the motorway at high speed from a nearby trailer park without properly checking for oncoming traffic.
